Ronaldo’s Portugal fail to seal Group B top spot on Monday evening as they were made to labor for a draw against a determined and sterned Iran side.
Iran going into the match knew they had to either win against Portugal or draw,which will mean Morocco would have to beat Spain by a two or more goal margin.
But as the saying has it, if wishes were horses, they will surely come as wished.
Portugal coach Fernando Santos brought in three changes to his line-up where he introduced Andrien Silva,Andre Silva and Ricardo Quarsema.
Portugal created series of attempts in the first 20minutes but could not score against a dogged Iran side.
Ricardo Quaresma got Portugal’s only goal of the match on the stroke of halftime with a sublime outside of the boot shot from the edge of the box.
Iran keeper Beiranvand saved Ronaldo’s spot kick in the 53th minute after the penalty was awarded by the VAR.
A controversial moment came in the match when Ronaldo was seen to have elbowed an Iran defender,the referee reviewed on the VAR screen but only to caution Ronaldo.
Iran started to pile on pressure against an aging Portuguese defence and they were duly awarded a penalty in the 92th minute by the VAR team after Southampton Cedric Soares handled the ball with his hand.
Iran scored and the game ended draw with Portugal in the second position.
The most important thing now is that Portugal is in round of 16 tie against Uruguay who are yet to concede in this year’s competition.
